NPC KICKSTARTS CAPACITY BUILDING TRAINING OF STAFF ON PRODUCTIVITY MEASUREMENT AND INDICES

In a concerted drive to implement the new Strategic Plan of National Productivity Centre, the Management has embarked on aggressive capacity building of the staff for effective and efficient service delivery. Towards this end, the Centre has begun the training of its workers on productivity measurement and indices.

Speaking at Mararaba Nasarawa State during a 4 – day Capacity building programme for staffers of the Department of Productivity Measurement and Index of the Centre, the Director-General, Dr. Kashim Akor, identified data gathering, analysis and dissemination on labour productivity and total factor productivity as a critical instrument for the diversification programme and change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

He argued that for the economy to be placed on the path of speedy recovery and sustainable development there is need for establishment of Productivity Data Bank and implementation of productivity measurement, which is geared towards measuring the performance of organizations and critical sectors of the economy in order to stimulate operational improvement.

According to Akor, “the Department of Productivity Measurement and Index was created recently to adequately address areas of productivity measurement, data collection and analysis in the nation’s economy”. The capacity building programme being anchored by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), was designed to assist the Centre to achieve the following objectives:

  • Building the capacity of the Centre on productivity measurement models;
  • Member, National Action Plan for the implementation of the National Policy on Productivity;
  • Design of statistical econometric models for computation of productivity index in the various sectors of the Nigerian economy;
  • Production of sectoral productivity statistics;
  • Dissemination of statistical information periodically for public awareness and usage; and
  • Development and adoption of appropriate measurement models.

Dr. Akor further opined that productivity measurement in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized as it provides the basis for knowing how well the various sectors of the economy have performed with a view to identifying areas of strengths and weaknesses that may need improvement or reinforcement.

The training modules covered all the critical aspects of productivity index and statistical tools for conducting productivity measurement at organizational, sectoral and national levels of the economy.
